Scripture… As We Live It #96

Posted by on Mar 7, 2010 in as we live it, scripture | 1 comment

This is the 96th passage in “Scripture… As We Live It“:

Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house (Let’s keep this between you and me since this is a personal, private issue and some of these things could be troubling or embarrassing.): (Romans 1:1-2 re-mix)

Now see, I’m gonna completely disagree with you on this one, Alan. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to comment on your recent post to this effect, but here goes.

The Onesimus/Philemon issue was *already* out in the open. He’d run away. Everyone knew he’d run away. There must have been plenty of believers in the church who couldn’t help but ‘take sides’ in their hearts, some with Philemon and some with Onesimus.

There’s a time for privacy about personal failings – witness Noah’s son backing into a tent holding a blanket. And there is a time when interpersonal issues need to be addressed publicly – most often, imho, at the point when they’ve already become public anyway.

Still, I love your basic point. Yes, our lives are to be intertwined. Not everything should be swept under the rug… as if that were possible within real community anyway!
