Day 10 – Fourth Day of Conference

My friend Danny (“learning…“) and I will be joining Dave and BeckLynn Black in Ethiopia for two weeks. I will not be able to post updates while I’m in Ethiopia, so I’m publishing these posts to keep you updated on our plans. We would appreciate your prayers.

The picture today shows Dave Black with a group of men in Alaba. The man in the middle is a believer whose 8 year old daughter was beheaded because her family were Christians.

I continue teaching a conference for elders on the book of 1 Corinthians. I plan to teach 1 Corinthians 12:1-13:13 in the morning, and I plan to teach 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 in the afternoon.

Danny also continues teaching through 1 Timothy to believers in a local prison, and going to villages in the afternoon.

We will not teach our conferences today. So, we will spend the day going to market, and going to some of the surrounding villages.

The picture today shows another street scene in the town of Alaba. Since the people here do not see alot of foreingees (white-faced foreigners – not sure how to spell the word), we have been told to expect alot of stares.

I continue teaching a conference for elders on the book of 1 Corinthians. I plan to teach 1 Corinthians 8:1-10:14 in the morning, and I plan to teach 1 Corinthians 10:15-11:34 in the afternoon.

Danny also continues teaching through 1 Timothy to believers in a local prison, and going to villages in the afternoon.

My friend Danny (“learning…“) and I will be joining Dave and BeckLynn Black in Ethiopia for two weeks. I will not be able to post updates while I’m in Ethiopia, so I’m publishing these posts to keep you updated on our plans. We would appreciate your prayers.

This is Sunday, and it is our first full day in Alaba. Also, Danny and I will each be speaking to different churches around the Alaba area.

I plan to teach from Hebrews 10:19-25. It is one of my favorite passages of Scripture, and I think it is very appropriate for the people in this area of Ethiopia who are facing many physical and spiritual struggles. They are also facing persecution from their neighbors.

Please pray that we will be able to communicate clearly. Also pray that we will be willing to learn from the brothers and sisters that we meet.

My friend Danny (“learning…“) and I will be joining Dave and BeckLynn Black in Ethiopia for two weeks. I will not be able to post updates while I’m in Ethiopia, so I’m publishing these posts to keep you updated on our plans. We would appreciate your prayers.

Today, Saturday, we travel from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to the town of Alaba. This will be our home for the next 10 days. The trip should only take 6 hours – if nothing goes wrong on the road.

Interestingly, we’ll be traveling in a vehicle that the people of our church helped to purchase a few years ago. Someone had given us a large sum of money. At the same time, we learned of the need for a vehicle in Alaba, so we gave the money to them. I’m excited about making the personal connection that we started several years ago.

Please pray for our travel… and remember to pray for our families. We miss them so much!

Today will be our first full day in Ethiopia. Danny and I will spend the day in Addis Ababa with Dave Black. I’m sure that we’ll see many interesting sights, and hear many interesting sounds, and taste many interesting foods, and smell many interesting… ummm… smells.

But, there’s another very important aspect of this day. Within a few days, we’ll be teaching people from a different culture. So, we need to learn as much as we can about their culture. This will be a very important day for us.

Landed Safely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Danny and I landed safely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia a few hours ago. We’re now in the Addis Kidan guest house for a couple of days before we leave for Alaba. The flights went great, and we were able to meet a few people from Alaba tonight.

I probably won’t be able to post any more “live” updates until we return from Alaba… or maybe not until we return home.

Most of this day will be spent in the air, flying from Washington, DC to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a quick refueling stop in Rome. The flight will be long.

So, what will I be doing? First, I’ll be walking around the plane regularly (I promise, Margaret). Also, I’m be reviewing my notes. I’m planning to lead a group of elders through the book of 1 Corinthians. Also, I’ll be speaking to two different churches. Then, hopefully, I’ll be able to sleep some also… and read, of course.

What can you pray for us today? Sanity and sleep during the flight… and grace as we go through customs.
