Doctrine or Community?
One of the most fascinating observations of my study of the church so far has been the dichotomy between doctrine and community. If a group stresses doctrine, a lack of community usually ensues. On the other hand, if a group stresses community, doctrine is just as quickly forgotten. (Yes, I realize these are generalizations.)
Is this biblical Christianity? Can a group be the church without both doctrine and community? Does proper doctrine (biblical doctrine) not lead to genuine community? Can true community be built without doctrine?
These are questions that I am just beginning to ask…
