Old Testament Prophets

Tuesday, in my Old Testament Theology seminar, we discussed the prophets briefly. Specifically, we talked about what they knew or did not know concerning their prophecies. A fellow student, Dougald at “Meditations on the Law“, wrote a post about this discussion called “What did the Old Testament Prophets know?

Dougald’s discussion centers around 1 Peter 1:10-12 –

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. (1 Peter 1:10-12 ESV)

Concerning this passage and Old Testament prophets, Dougald says:

  • Their prophets prophesied of the grace that would come to you (and I would include all Christians in this).
  • They did not know where and at what time the Christ would appear. (I would argue they understood it to be after the deportation to Babylon but Peter doesn’t go in depth beyond that).
  • The prophet did know about the sufferings of Christ and the glories lit. after these sufferings.
  • That it was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you (the church or future generations).

I appreciate the work that Dougald is putting into this topic. I hope you enjoy his post about it.
