This is the 53rd installment in “Scripture… As We Live It“:
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task occupation. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church. ? He must not be a recent convert, but must be a seminary graduate or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. (1 Timothy 3:1-7 re-mix)
You might want to note that the seminary graduate might become puffed up. A danger to guard against.
That was an especially good one. Read the “job posting” for many pastoral positions and then compare them to 1 Tim 3 and they don’t have much in common.
Uh, Um, Er… OOOohhhhh. Phew!

If I may, can I add a few brother. Or: a successful business man, an impeccable background, he can not be a janitor, or push carts at Target, he can’t have been an ex-felon. He can not be a High School dropout, or have limited education, he must be well spoken and very intelligent which are all subpoints of being a good teacher and the other qualites in order to help with the “business” decisions of the church.
These qualifications are also for Deacons just in case you are not elder ran.
You could have put the words “at a time” in after “the husband of one wife.”
