Creation and Scripture and Church

This Sunday, we are going to begin a study of the book of Genesis. We are going to study about 2-3 chapters per week. This week, we begin with Genesis 1-2, the story of creation.

It seems to me that the focus of chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis is on the unique creation of mankind, and the special relationship of God to mankind, and the special relationship of man and woman.

But, it is always good to look at examples of how Scripture uses Scripture. And, creation is a common theme in Scripture.

For example, I love the way that God uses his creation activity to demonstrate the folly of Job’s questions in Job 38-39. (A friend of mine told me last night that I only liked that passage because God seems to be sarcastic…. he’s probably right.) Here’s an example:

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” (Job 38:1-4 ESV)

So, in what other ways do the authors of Scripture use creation? Do they use creation to help us understand the church?
