Jesus is the Foundation

As my readers know, I write about the church. Duh. The name of my blog is “The Assembling of the Church.” I am very interested in the church. But, the church is not my primary interest. My primary interest is Jesus Christ.

When Paul, or Peter, or John, etc. wrote about the church, they wrote from the perspective of Jesus Christ being the foundation. Not only was he the foundation of right belief, but he was also the foundation of right practice – a right way of life. What we think about God, the world, and ourselves is forever changed by the person of Jesus Christ. Similarly, the way we treat and interact with others is forever changed by the person and continued work of Jesus Christ.

The church is important because Jesus is important. But, Jesus remains primary.

    Can you truly separate Jesus in the world today from the Church? Of course Jesus is primary but his mission was left to the church after he ascended (which is celebrated this Thursday, by the way) and in a profound sense Jesus and the Church are one. By the way, what to make of the new testament passages which refer to the apostles and prophets being the foundation with Jesus being the cornerstone? Too often we try to separate the Church from the Lord Jesus, but in reality it is his living presence in the world. I think we should stop trying to rank in importance Jesus versus his Church. A body without a head cannot survive and a head without a body cannot either. Without the Church, Jesus’ gospel goes nowhere, and without Jesus, the gospel is empty.

    Brian,

    When the authors speak of “foundations” and “cornerstones” they are using metaphorical language, and often use it differently (Romans 15:20, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Ephesians 2:20, Hebrews 6:1).

    While I agree with much of what you said here, I still think that Christ is preeminent.

    Paul also declared the preeminence of Christ (Col. 1:13ff)

    It seems that heaven also holds the same view (Rev. 5:11-12)

    For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen. (Rom.11:36)
