Is This Church?
So, you’re getting together with another brother or sister in Christ. Is this church? Are you church?
What would make you church and what would make you not church?
Do certain things have to happen? Should certain things not happen?
Does your meeting need to be at a certain time or place for you to be church together? Can it not take place at certain places or certain times for you to be church?
Are you church together only with certain brothers and sisters in Christ?
What makes a group (two or more) church?
I think we’ve really messed with the meaning of the word Church. When looking at Scripture I think “the church” means “the people who are following Christ”. The church in Jerusalem were the Christ followers in Jerusalem.
So I’m a Winnipeg Jets hockey fan (Yeah… I know our hockey team has moved, but we still hope for their return). If someone had a message for the Winnipeg Jets fans… that would be a message to me. If the Winnipeg Jets fans got together for some rally to bring the Jets back to town, the news would say that the Jets fans did this or that. I’m a Jet’s fan when I’m with other Jet’s fans, and also when I’m alone.
Being part of Christ’s church is who I am – every day of the week, no matter where I am or who I’m with.
However, if I am alone, I would not say “I am Christ’s church”. But if I am with 2 or more I could say “We are Christ’s church”… just like I could say “We are Winnipeg Jet’s fans”.
lemme get back to you on that … the reformed side of my brain and the organic side of my brain are trying to find the truth together …
