Scripture… As We Live It #218
This is the 218th passage in “Scripture… As We Live It.”
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God preach sermons to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life their study, and imitate their faith do whatever they tell you. (Hebrews 13:7 re-mix)
(Please read the first post for an explanation of this series.)
There are few chapters in the Bible more misused than Hebrews 13, love this SAWKI!
by the way, your posts aren’t liking/sharing right on facebook, is there a problem with the links or something?
Ten verses later, another highly abused scripture…
“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
After realizing the cult our last church had become, we were directed by a friend to a study on the Shepherding Movement, who just about use Hebrews 13:17 as a banner scripture, as did our last church. It seems that they do not understand the complete definition of what was translated as ‘obey’. Could have all sorts of fun re-mixing that scripture. I am not the master you are, but, if I may…
“Obey your leaders, without question and submit as they are your authority on all matters. They micromanage you as men who will keep you accountable. Obey them so that you will be a joy, not a burden, for that will be of no advantage to them.”
Both Alan and John’s ‘remix’ hit close to home for people such as myself who spent a number of years in a controlling church. The saddest thing for me in retrospect is that I bought into their highly detailed teaching on ‘disciplining’ our children.
