Scripture… As We Live It #212
This is the 212th passage in “Scripture… As We Live It.”

Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble I will make it a rule that no Christian is ever allowed to eat meat again, and even questioning this rule will be considered heretical. (1 Corinthians 8:13 re-mix)

I could accept this if the rule was to outlaw anchovies, and maybe aspartame 🙂
But seriously Alan, do any churches have diet laws and food police?
Or are you discussing the principal of preferring one another over
ourselves?
If so, from the limited gossip I’ve heard, church leaders of all sorts have a personal liberty standard that is more liberal than non leaders, and that trumps their liberty in a showdown.If insensitivity to a brothers weak conscience is widespread, and its not a hotly debated topic, its got to be because leaders are leading by example and should be challenged.
Not sure though.

This chapter is about foods offered to Idols, and explaind what this can do to the weak conscience of the new believer. So in essence what I get out of this is show love to your brother. Do not flaunt your liberty, be considerate, remember when you were first born again. You were careful about how you carried yourself. So in love do not eat in front of your brother that is defiled by this.

I’ve always thought the passage had a much wider application than just food. Your rephrase hits it on the head for legalistic churches.
1. They define the meaning of the verse
2. They define the rule
3. They impose the rule…not a matter of personal choice
4. It becomes one of the essentials of the faith…
Tom, yes i think it is also much deeper than food. Food is just the physical analogy to bring home the Spitual realty, as Christ himself said if we do not understand the physical how will we ever understand the Spiritual.
