2 John 1-3 Translation

My translation:

[This is from] “the old man”(*) [and is written] to the chosen lady and her children, those whom I truly love. It’s not just me, but all those who know the truth [love you]. [We love you] because of that truth that is currently in us and will remain with us forever.

[I pray that] grace, mercy, and peace will be with us in truth and love – [the grace, mercy, and peace] which is from God the Father, and Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son. (2 John 1-3)

* or “the elder”

Greek Text:

Ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῆς, οὓς ἐγὼ ἀγαπῶ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, καὶ οὐκ ἐγὼ μόνος ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν, διὰ τὴν ἀλήθειαν τὴν μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ μεθ’ ἡμῶν ἔσται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. ἔσται μεθ’ ἡμῶν χάρις ἔλεος εἰρήνη παρὰ θεοῦ πατρός, καὶ παρὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός, ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ.

Another translation for comparison:

The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever: Grace, mercy, and peace will[ be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love. (2 John 1-3 ESV)

    Alan,

    Wow! You can write ordinary English as well? 🙂

    That’s not meant to be understood as sarcasm. Sincerely, that kind of translation does great service to many people, who don’t have the educational benefits that many have.

    My wife often used to constructively criticize me for using language that was not in ordinary use.

    I hope you do the whole NT in the same manner!

    I understand what you did with the brackets astrick and parenthesis, but it does take away from the readability of it. How about posting it clean first and then formatted as you did afterward, then the comparison translation.

    Good job. Keep it up….

    Now where can I get some free greek lessons…

    Thank you! The whole NT? Well, I’ll start with 2 John and 3 John… then we’ll see where that leads.

    I am serious about the Greek. I have been paraphrasing scripture for a while now, for use with oral style teaching and Bible storying. It is my default for learning scripture by heart.

    Often I need to read through couple of translations to understand a passage better. I imagine going to Greek would be better still. I hope to return in 2010 to finish my M.Div. at NOBTS , so I imagine I could take Greek there, but in the meantime. I may try to self teach a little while here in Brazil.

    Any readers here who have a suggestion, let me know.

    There are a few online tutorials, but I haven’t read through any of them enough to be able to recommend one over another. If you decide to get a Greek grammar and go through it on your own, I’ll be glad to answer any questions that might have.
