Scripture… As We Live It #79

Posted by on Nov 8, 2009 in as we live it, scripture | 4 comments

This is the 79th installment of “Scripture… As We Live It“:

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you you should repeat these words after passing out the bread during the Lord’s Supper but before eating the bread, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, repeat these words after passing out the cups but before drinking saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25 re-mix)

    Thanks for the chuckle. 🙂

Too bad the Bible wasn’t written in a different format…
Chapter 1 for procedures during church service.
Chapter 2 for church organization and staffing role diagrams
Chapter 3 for best program strategies
Chapter 4 how to do cross cultural missions
    Chapter 5 – 100 Core doctrinal statements
Chapter 101 Optional, less essential doctrinal beliefs
Appendix – List of approved songs and books

Your verse here would have fit nicely into Chapter 1.

You don’t know how many times I have actually heard this in church during communion. Man…It is like the empty words of “Guide, Gaurd, & Direct Us!” Come people!!!! 🙂
I tis great being at a church now that celebrates communion in different ways all the time. It is refreshing and doesn’t make it something that we just do to get it over with so we can go watch the Cowboys.
Thanks Alan for this great post brother.
Keep up the great work you are doing with your blog!

I had a slightly different take that may help spur conversation…

For I received from the Lord that which can only be passed to an elder: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” Only elders should lead this ceremony, use only some type of bread-stuff and “fruit of the vine”, and repeat these words in the same wrote manner every time.
